Lifecycle Score

7.5/10

"A best-in-class email program built largely in isolation from the ecosystem around it."

How this review was conducted

Over seven days I experienced Just Ingredients exactly as a first-time customer would: signed up, browsed as a real shopper across 15+ site visits, abandoned a cart, opened and clicked every email, audited deliverability, and mapped every channel I encountered and every one that was missing. No interviews, no internal access. Only what the lifecycle itself revealed.

The setup: Shopify · Klaviyo · Subscription + one-time · Eight channels reviewed

The welcome experience: genuinely excellent

"This is among the most sophisticated welcome sequences I've observed for a brand at this size."

Four things stood out. Two emails a day for 72 hours: aggressive, but deliberate, owning the highest-engagement window of the entire lifecycle. A disciplined urgency ladder: the 10% code introduced Day 1, reinforced Day 2, expiring Day 3. A plain-text founder email as a pattern interrupt: no design, no CTA, just why Karalynne started the brand, and in a polished sequence it lands hardest. And trust addressed early: medical data and expert validation arrive on Day 2, exactly where a supplement buyer's hesitation peaks.

Deliverability matched the polish. Every email reached the inbox, 80% in Primary rather than Promotions, with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC all passing. Clean infrastructure plus low-promotional intent equals consistent placement.

Where the picture thins out

The email program is the centre of this lifecycle, and it is carrying almost everything alone. Three patterns emerged across the week:

1. No early capture. Fifteen site visits, zero pop-ups. Six sessions of clear research intent went uncaptured, and SMS is collected only at checkout, so high-intent anonymous traffic simply disappears.

2. Invisible assets. A rewards programme, a blog, and a podcast all exist: strong trust assets for this category. None of them appeared in a single email or flow all week.

3. The buried conversion asset. Their speak-to-an-expert tool, arguably the highest-leverage guided-selection asset a supplement brand can own, lives only inside one Day 3 email. Not on the homepage, not in the navigation, not in a pop-up.

There were smaller orchestration tells too: adding to cart on-site triggered nothing until Klaviyo could resolve my identity via an email click, and the checkout recovery email showed three products when my cart held two. The platform can only recover what it can identify, and continuity is where retention begins.

Where Just Ingredients sits

On the MyMailMint Lifecycle Maturity Model, Just Ingredients has fully mastered Level 1, Lifecycle Automation: welcome, browse, checkout, deliverability, every foundational flow live and correctly triggered. The opportunity is Level 2, Lifecycle Understanding: intent, identity, context, personalisation.

Level 1 asks: what did the customer do? Level 2 asks: who is this customer, and what are they trying to achieve? The brand knows what customers do. The next step is understanding why.

"The brand knew what I did. But it never felt like it understood why I was there."

If I were advising them

Three priorities would move Just Ingredients from Level 1 to Level 2. Capture customer intent: introduce on-site pop-up and early SMS capture, and ask why a visitor is here, not just what they clicked. Increase educational touchpoints: bring the blog, podcast, and ingredient education into the flows, because for a brand built on transparency, content is the trust engine that compounds repeat purchase. And surface the expert consultation: move it from a buried Day 3 email to the homepage, navigation, and welcome flow, where uncertain buyers actually are.

Repeat purchases don't happen when customers receive the right email. They happen when customers feel understood.
